The best music has a story behind it. Charlie Brown Goes to the Nutcracker by Ron LeGault Quintet has exactly that, the group has been performing this show at the beloved St Julien Hotel in Boulder for 10 years. Ron imagines Charlie Brown, whose favorite music is of course jazz, going to the Nutcracker and experiencing this classic ballet from the perspective that only Charlie could have. With a mix a tracks by Vince Guaraldi and Tchaikovsky and clever arrangements by Ron and his band, this is a perfect Christmas album for the whole family. Recorded in DSD256 on the Sonoma system, this is offered on SACD and download.

Grace ★★★★★

The live recording really captures the warmth of that hotel performance—you can almost hear the crowd settling in as the quintet starts Tchaikovsky's themes with a jazz twist.

Owen L. ★★★★★

The piano and bass interplay on the slower tracks is gorgeous, especially the Nutcracker melodies reworked into a jazz quintet setting. I put it on while wrapping gifts and ended up just sitting there listening instead.

Eva ★★★★★

This has become my default holiday dinner soundtrack since November. The quintet's take on the Nutcracker suites swings in a way I didn't expect, and knowing it was recorded live at that Boulder hotel makes the room feel real.
